Wine-dark hall
Use flat wine-dark ink or the hall radial. Keep edges and recesses red-black.
Royals & Rogues · Secondary design system
An alternative Royals & Rogues system for night, candlelight, secrecy, private deals, covert action, and Rogue-centered Scenes. It contrasts with the primary royal-green system without changing the game's structure.
01 · Purpose
The Garnet Night system is a secondary theme. The primary green system remains the default Royals & Rogues reference. Select the alternative when the Scene or mode is explicitly associated with night, candlelight, secrecy, covert activity, or Rogue-led play.
| Dimension | Royal-green system | Garnet Night system |
|---|---|---|
| Primary association | Royal order, established play, public strategy, and the visible table | Night, secrecy, private agreements, covert movement, and Rogue-centered action |
| Ground | Green-black ink | Wine-dark ink over a red-black void |
| Primary action | Emerald | Garnet, the heraldic gules |
| Green | Structural and actionable | Restricted to table felt, Round timing, and heraldic vert |
| Metal | Antique gold | Antique gold plus argent for steel and Counter states |
| Typography | EB Garamond and Avenir | Same base, with optional Renaissance manuscript features |
| Game rules | Canonical game structure | Unchanged |
02 · Color
Wine-dark grounds replace the royal greens. Garnet becomes primary action. Gold and parchment remain shared with the primary system; argent is added as a second metal.

Do not use garnet as an error token or use the error color for normal actions.03 · Light and atmosphere
The visual environment is a candle-lit game hall rather than a uniformly red interface. Dark surfaces carry most of the composition; warm light marks only the active object, decision, or disclosure.
Use flat wine-dark ink or the hall radial. Keep edges and recesses red-black.
Use one gold or garnet glow per composition. Emerald glow is permitted only at the poker table.
Use recessed wells, occlusion, and staged information layers. Do not reduce legibility or hide required state.
Gold registers objects and structure. Argent identifies steel, parry, and Counter contexts.
Flat wine-dark ink, the wine-and-garnet hall radial, or the heritage-green table-felt radial.
Pure white, decorative gradients, photography washes, multiple glows, glassmorphism, bright ambient animation, or green action controls.
04 · Typography
The base typography is the same as the primary system. The alternative adds optional Renaissance features for chapter openings, long rules passages, ceremonies, and historical material.
Use at most one per chapter or long rules composition. A gilded variant places the initial inside an oxblood well.
True small caps support chapter labels, running heads, and serif eyebrows.
Use old-style figures in prose. Stats, counts, and ordinals remain lining figures.
Discretionary ligatures are opt-in for display text and are not used in interface labels.
Use a single fleuron between gold hairlines for section boundaries in manuscript contexts.
Use one upright garnet display phrase per headline. Do not italicize it or add a second phrase.
05 · Materials and movement
The material system remains compatible with the primary theme. Its inputs change from green-black and emerald to wine-dark and garnet.
| Category | Definition | Alternative treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Enamel surface | Opaque panel with a double gold rim | Wine-ink surface and red-black outer separation. |
| Enamel medallion | Circular registered object | Garnet is the default hue; Court colors may replace it. |
| Champlevé | Recessed content well | Red-black depth with restrained gold edge. |
| Rule | Fine cloison hairline | Antique gold; argent only for a defined steel context. |
| Spacing | 4 px grid | Unchanged from the primary system. |
| Radii | 4 px controls, 14 px panels, 18 px playing cards | Unchanged from the primary system. |
| Motion | 160 ms quick and 420 ms settle | Fades and small settles. No bounce, spin, or ambient movement. |

| Queen | Intellect | Bright amethyst |
| Jack | Skill | Bright azure |

08 · Transitions
A theme transition must preserve orientation and meaning. The interface should change environmental treatment without changing component placement, labels, state, or controls.
Change themes because the Scene, location, time, secrecy state, or mode changes—not as arbitrary decoration.
Preserve navigation position, identity, hierarchy, component dimensions, labels, focus, and active state.
Transition grounds, surfaces, action, glow, and metal treatment. Do not rebuild the interface.
Crossfade environmental colors within the 420 ms settle duration. Respect reduced-motion settings.
